failure to find "input" file

Firefly was working fine for me, but then it started to give me this error:

CAN NOT OPEN FIREFLY INPUT FILE.
THE FIREFLY INPUT FILE NAMED 'input' MUST BE IN THE CURRENT DIRECTORY.

but there WAS an input file in the current directory. I link to it in my submission script, which has the line
ln -s bla.input input

In fact, firefly will work in one directory, then give this error in another directory, when using the same submission and input files.
I am perplexed. am I doing something stupid? Can anyone help?
