Dear Thoams,
          I routinely work with the servers you are interested in. Actually, I use a dual 6-cores Intel Xeon X5680 (@3.33 GHz) with 96 GB of DDR3 1333 MHz RAM as well as a quad 12-cores AMD Opteron 6180 se (@2.5 GHz) with 128 GB of DDR3 1333 MHz RAM. At the moment the two servers are heavily loaded with several tasks. As soon as possible I will try for you a test using Firefly 7.1.G (under Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64 Bit) for a comparison between the two architectures.
