Hi Alex,

my guess is that you are facing incompatibility between virtualized
environment and Firefly. Due to bugs in hypervisors and CPUs,
some instructions behave differently while running on raw hardware
and under hypervisors.

I'd suggest you to add the following line to your input:

 $smp call64=0 $end

P.S. I know Firefly was successfully run on Windows Azure using MS MPI
so I do not think there should be any conceptual problems with EC2.
