Dear Pasquale,

I think we should take into account that OpenMPI itself
opens lots of sockets as well in addition to P2P's ones.

Next, to get the number of open sockets per your sixteen-core box,
you need to multiply all by sixteen.

I'd suggest to try to run Firefly with more than 256 cores in xdlb mode,
while placing only e.g., 8 processes per each system and check whether
this helps or not. If it does, this would mean you was hitting some
system-wide limits.
